What can I do to help?

Published in

Greetings All,

We’ve received a strong positive response to the idea of a food cooperative in the Altadena area. People tell us they’re excited about getting a source for local, wholesome products - a community resource to help us find more sustainable living options.

After sharing their enthusiasm, they often ask: “What can I do to help?”

Here’s one answer: From the next page choose a team that interests you then pick a task you can start on. We’re trying to break the whole process down into bite-sized pieces and prioritize them according to what needs to be done now. The team approach is meant to emphasize that we’ll be more effective (and have more fun) if we coordinate our efforts.

We’ll need team leaders to drive forward each of these areas. Maybe you’re the perfect person for this job, maybe you know someone who is (and can send them our way), maybe you can only help a little on a particular project. Any of the above will be helpful to us.

If you’re not sure how much you can help, try taking on one small individual task. We’ll understand if that’s all you can do right now - we’re volunteers and have busy lives also! It will be fine if you can do something small to nudge us along.

Another alternative is to take on the position of Secretary/Historian. As outlined below, this very important person will help us keep our organizing details together.

For more information about starting a food co-op, see the Food Co-op 500 webinar recordings at: http://cdsfood.centraldesktop.com/fc500registration/ These give a good introduction to the process. Other pages on their site provide more tips and information.

Our next major goal is to create a feasibility study. The team tasks listed on the next page are in support of this. Like I said above, the initial response has been enthusiastic. But now we have to put some numbers behind the enthusiasm. That's what a rough study will give us.

Remember that this is a community effort. The more everyone helps, the faster we’ll get our doors open. And along the way there’s a good chance we’ll all make some friends.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Patrick
