In continuing our series of posts on our co-op’s founding details, let’s talk today about our proposed vision statement.

This is one more snippet from our soon to be published business plan. It's an attempt to communicate what the Founding Team has been working on.
From BusinessDictionary.com comes this succinct definition...
"Vision Statement: Aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future. It is intended to serves as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action."
So it’s pretty important! In contrast with our mission statement, which explains why we exist, our vision statement explains our shared view of where we’re going.
Here’s what our Founding Team has come up with so far...
“To become a thriving cooperative grocery store whose core business areas include a juice/coffee bar, deli, prep kitchen, eating area and community room. Additional planned business areas include a bakery, rental kitchen, business incubator program, café, brew pub and farm.
To develop these business areas while pursuing the “triple bottom line” of profit (for business success), people (consideration of employees and the community) and planet (encouraging a sustainable economy).
To become an important, trusted and enjoyed community asset because of its integrity and contributions to the greater Altadena area.”
We’re trying to convey that we’re aiming for a profitable full-service grocery store that will be brought into existence with consideration for all parties involved.
We’d like to expand beyond the grocery store but feel that we’d be wise to get the primary operation up and profitable before venturing further afield. One expansion example: a rental kitchen to help individuals get their good-for-the-earth food businesses started. We’ll become their first client and our members will get access to unique local products. Everyone will win.
When we get to a position of acting on those additional planned business areas it will be time to re-evaluate the situation. For instance: just recently a rental kitchen opened in Pasadena. Before we jump into our own rental kitchen we’ll want to evaluate how well they’re doing and whether the need we see right now is still present.
So how does this look to you all, our potential members?
